Just because it’s familiar, doesn’t mean it’s right for you.
Oftentimes the things that we think are “right” for us are really just the things that are familiar to us. We misdiagnose the feeling as being “right” when it really is just a feeling that we’re “comfortable” with and used to experiencing. Whatever it is we’re used to, is what we’ll continue to seek to create for our lives.
If you grew up listening to country music every Sunday morning while waking up to mom cooking breakfast, then it’s likely your Sunday’s will feel off until you recreate that for yourself as an adult. And the crazy part is you probably won’t even know why your Sunday’s feel off. Until you recognize that some of your feelings exist solely because they’re familiar, you’ll continue life totally oblivious to the power your feelings and your comfort zone have over you.
When we can break free from the bondage that our comfort zone can put us in, we can begin to really live a life designed by our own beliefs versus a belief system passed down to us by our culture, family and society.
Now equally important is the fact that this same system can be used in our favor. Positive habits can be created and preserved by using this same technique. Let’s say for example you decided to start working out at 6am every morning. Let’s say you continued this routine for 6 months, then 12 months. How do you think you’d feel if you woke up and didn’t work out at 6am for a whole week? You’d probably say to yourself…”Something just doesn’t feel right.” And once you started your same routine again…all would be right in your world.
