Are you ever afraid of making mistakes? If you are or ever have been, know you’re not alone. But the point to remember is we all have made mistakes in our lives. It’s how we learn and grow from them that matters most. After all, success is about failing forward.
On this episode of #MindsetCheck, we interviewed Christi Carillo and asked her to talk about what “failing forward” means to her. She shares with us how she learns and grows from her mistakes, and maintains the mindset needed to continue to push forward.
Quick Episode Snapshot:
- Be your own biggest supporter.
- Grow from your mistakes.
- Be open-minded and willing to accept help.
- Work on your self-growth daily.
Below you’ll find various questions we asked her about what it takes to have a resilient mindset and how she stays motivated in order to tackle the day.
Q: Any practices/mantras/tactics you are currently utilizing to get your mindset right every day?
A: I start my day by drastically changing my physiology! It doesn’t always mean working out. Sometimes all you need is an entirely new perspective on life or at least what’s happening right now. The mind follows the body, so by radically changing your physiology you’re in a slump or first thing in the morning, you will put yourself back on track for success.
Q: Is there something that’s currently on your radar that’s been your theme this week?
A: I think this week my theme has been about learning how to detach from the outcome. Realizing that what others do or the choices they make usually isn’t about “us.” Knowing the outcomes of our actions can be different than desired and not always in our favor is a tough lesson but one we must learn. I believe it starts when we realize there’s no such thing as “the best” choice.
Q: Anything particular that prepares you mentally for the day? Do you have a morning routine?
A: My morning routine includes making my bed, journaling, and exercising with a positive upbeat music playlist. While I work out, I usually like to listen to an audiobook on self-growth and mindset or leadership/business topics. Sometimes when I fall off my routine, I tend to listen to Tony Robbins or Jim Rohn to motivate me forward.
I recently heard Gary V. say something to the effect that there are no perfect decisions so we shouldn’t waste our time trying to figure out the perfect decision before taking action. This resonated with me because I can easily get in my head about expecting perfect action from myself.
A few other talking points that Christi mentioned:
- Procrastination. Procrastination is one of the biggest pitfalls for many people. She warned that the only way out of procrastination is to push through it before it’s too late.
- Qualities of a Winner. As a coach, she looks for certain traits in people. Some of these qualities include hunger and humility; someone who hates losing more than they like winning–and open-minded individuals, and someone who is working on their growth every day as.
- Mindset. It all starts from within. Your mindset will determine how your life will unfold. Period. We are our own hero or adversary. We tend to blame others for our failures when it may be ourselves who is causing those failures. We need to accept the mistakes we make and grow from them rather than let them hold us back.
Success isn’t about living flawlessly. That’s impossible. It’s about not giving up…even when you “fail.” In fact, nowadays if I’m not failing at something every week I feel like I’m not trying hard enough. If you look at “failing” as part of success, then you won’t be so hard on yourself when you make a mistake. Remember, just fail forward.
